John McEwen
John McEwen (b.1942) met Kenneth Armitage when on the editorial staff of Studio International, through his brother the artist Rory McEwen. In 1968 he house-sat for Kenneth while he was in Berlin. He was art critic for The Spectator (1975-84); The Sunday Telegraph (1991-2001); London correspondent for Art in America, art advisor to The Sunday Times Magazine (1980s) and premiered Richmond Oak drawings and sculptures, Critic’s Choice, ICA 1978. In these years he served on committees for the Arts Council, British Council, Government Art Collection and the inaugural Turner Prize. His catalogue essays include: Taranman (with Roland Penrose) 1982; Artcurial, Paris, 1985; Kenneth Armitage: 80th Birthday Survey, Yorkshire Sculpture Park 1996 and Jonathan Clark Fine Art 2001. A trustee of the Kenneth Armitage Foundation since its foundation, his publications include Michael Sandle (Lund Humphries 2002), a monograph of the Kenneth Armitage Foundation’s first fellow.
